It was the month of Dec 2021 and the second wave of Covid had just ebbed. I wanted to give my wife a taste of trekking and was looking for something easy, yet interesting. Uttari betta trek, also known as Huthridurga trek is an easy one yet can be daunting for a beginner on a hot day. This trek is also attempted by some in the night for a great view of the sunrise.
Whom is this trek for?
This trek is good for beginners who do not want to stay overnight and like rocky terrain. It is to be noted that a good part of the trek involves climbing over rocky stairs that can get super hot on a sunny day. There aren’t many steep climbs here, so people with average fitness can do it comfortably.

Features of the trek
While this trek is essentially climbing a rocky hill, there are portions with good amount of vegetation and shade. There is a small deviation near the top with a small temple and provides a good view of the valley below. There is a small tank with stagnant water next to the temple. One can spend some time there to enjoy the wind and take in the views of the valley. There is an element of adventure thrown in too. To reach the highest point of the trek, there is a small opening between the boulders with just sufficient space for one person to crawl through. If you don’t want to do that, there is an alternate route to an equally pretty lower summit. So the claustrophobic need not sweat!

Other things to note
We went to this trek through BMC( Bangalore Mountaineering Club). We did see many people drive there though. There is a small parking area near the base. A simple google search will get you the route. Carry sunscreen, packed lunch and water with you. Keep a raincoat and cap handy to handle the vagaries of the weather. There are no washrooms around the starting point! So, if you halt somewhere while travelling to the trek location, don’t forget use the washroom. There is a small shop at the base with items like biscuits, water, some snacks etc. and may serve some buttermilk too. Do check the weather forecast before planning as the rocks can get very slippery if it rains.
Don’t leave any garbage in the area. We surely didn’t leave any there to spoil your mood. Please do comment below on your experience of the trek.
